Medical Aid in Dying (“MAID”)*: Discussion of the California law and application, health systems involved in implementing the law , and Rossmoor residents whose loved ones utilized medical aid in dying. Also, clinicians’ involvement in helping patients utilize this assistance. Discussion of voluntary stopping eating and drinking (“VSED”) as an alternative way to end life. 6/17/2024, 6/16/2025
Advance Healthcare Directives and Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment (“POLST”)*: review of this directive, when to utilize it, and discussion of various treatment options. Review of Advance Healthcare Directives and values that create a foundation for utilization of POLST. Discussion of advance care planning for patients experiencing dementia. 4/15/2024, 1/20/2025
Burial and Cremation*: Managers of various burial and cremation services presented their services and fees involved. In addition, discussion of “green burial” and body composting, a natural method that is more enrvironmentally friendly. 6/20/2022, 10/20/2025
When Its No Longer Possible to Live at Home*: Presentation by experts in helping patients and families decide when living at home is no longer possible including transition to Assisted Living, Board and Care, Memory care units. The presentation also included an overview of care management services and private paid caregivers to help one live at home as long as possible. 4/17/2023, 4/21/2025
Spiritual and Religious Aspects at End of Life*: Clergy representing Christian, Jewish, and Buddhist faiths discuss traditions and rituals around the time of death. 6/19/2023
Inpatient and Outpatient Palliative Care and Hospice*: Clinicians gave an overview of each service which helps patients medically and emotionally at end of life cope with pain and other distressing aspects of their disease. 10/18/2021
Living my Best with Life Threatening Disease*: overview of coping methods that help one in living with life threatening disease. Presentations by Rossmoor residents living with life threatening disease as to how they cope and live their life to the fullest. 9/16/2024
Writing an Ethical Will: Discussion of the purpose of ethical wills which bequeath lessons a person has learned in their life including the values that guided them. Ethical Wills include what has mattered the most to us in our life, what have we been to others and ourselves and what we have we modeled for our loved ones.
